It is named for Paris Eugene Singer, an heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune who developed the island during the early twentieth century. The island's modern history traces to the Florida land boom of the 1920s, when developers platted virtually every home lot and poured capital into the Blue Heron hotel, which was left unfinished when the boom collapsed and was later razed. Today Singer Island is best known for its shoreline of high-rise condominiums, resorts, and hotels, including the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort that stands near the site of the original Blue Heron. The residential profile skews toward oceanfront and lagoon-side condominiums, with a smaller share of single-family homes, and a permanent population of roughly 3,500 within the broader Riviera Beach community. John D. MacArthur Beach State Park anchors the island's northern end, preserving natural beach, dunes, and coastal hammock habitat donated in part by the MacArthur Foundation; the park opened to the public in 1989. Access to Singer Island is via the Blue Heron Boulevard bridge from the mainland, reached from Interstate 95 and PGA Boulevard to the west. The Palm Beach Inlet marks the island's southern tip.
