Sunrise is a city in central-western Broward County, Florida, and a principal city within the Miami metropolitan area. It lies roughly 13 miles west of downtown Fort Lauderdale and adjacent to the Everglades' western edge, positioned at the crossroads of several of South Florida's major transportation corridors. The 2020 census placed the population at 97,335, making Sunrise one of the larger municipalities in Broward County.
The city's modern identity is closely tied to retail and sports. Sawgrass Mills, opened in 1990, is among the largest outlet and destination shopping centers in the United States—described as the largest single-story outlet mall in the country—with more than 400 stores, restaurants, and entertainment venues spread across over two million square feet. Immediately adjacent, the Amerant Bank Arena serves as the home of the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League and hosts major concerts and events, giving Sunrise a regional draw that extends well beyond its residential population.
Sunrise was developed in the mid-20th century as a planned community, and its neighborhoods reflect that orderly growth, with a mix of established single-family subdivisions, garden apartment communities, and active-adult housing that has made it popular with a range of residents, including retirees. Sunrise is bordered by I-595, I-75, and the Sawgrass Expressway, with the Florida Turnpike nearby, giving it direct connections to three international airports and every major highway in South Florida.
